- 2 sheets of puff pastry store-bought or homemade
- 2 cups whole milk
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Prepare Puff Pastry Layers
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and brush with melted butter. Sprinkle sugar on top, then cut the pastry into equal rectangles (6-8). Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden and puffed. Let them cool.
Make the Pastry Cream
In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat. In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks and sugar until thickened. Add cornstarch and whisk until smooth. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly. Return to the saucepan and cook until thick, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in butter, vanilla extract, and salt. Let cool.
Assemble the Cake
Place the first layer of puff pastry on a serving platter. Spread a thin layer of pastry cream over the pastry, then add another layer of puff pastry. Repeat until all layers are stacked. Finish with a final layer of puff pastry on top.
Chill and Serve
Refrigerate the assembled cake for at least 1 hour to allow the pastry cream to set. Once ready to serve, dust the top with powdered sugar and slice carefully with a serrated knife to reveal the beautiful layers. Enjoy!
